If you have kids in your life, we believe playing board games with them is one of the best activities you could choose. Benefits include:

  • Showing your kids you value spending quality time together
  • Strengthening their logical reasoning, math skills, cooperation, etc. in a playful context
  • Practicing following rules in a structured activity
  • Fostering emotional control in handling winning and losing
  • Sparking creativity and encouraging imagination
  • Sharing fun moments and creating memories together

Whether you are aware of it or not, we are living in a golden age of board games for children! No longer are you limited to “classics” that leave much to be desired (for both the child and the parent), but instead there are hundreds of kids’ games that have been released in the past two decades that are engaging for both adults and children and span a variety of themes and modern board game mechanisms.

On this page, we have compiled our top board game recommendations for kids. They are organized in categories of ascending complexity, with rough age brackets for when we feel they could be introduced. However, it is important to note:

  • The Age Brackets Are Based on Complexity - Each category specifies the age bracket that we feel that game could be introduced successfully to a child. However, many of the games still work great with older kids! The rankings are intended to ascend in complexity to make it easier to identify the “next game” as kids learn and grow.
  • All Kids Are Different - Age is not necessarily a good measure of an individual child’s capabilities, and you certainly know your child better than we do! Additionally, learning board games is very additive, stacking a lot of skills and concepts, so a child that has played a lot of games will naturally have more capacity to learn more complex games.
  • Playing Games With Kids Takes Patience! - It is important to have the right expectations when introducing a child to a game. Especially in the early ages, it is common to not even finish the first few games as they get more familiar with the new concepts. Getting distracted and the occasional tantrum are a given. But if you go into each game seeing it as an opportunity to teach and practice those social skills, it can be less frustrating. And the investment is really worth it for the fun experiences you will be able to share together!
